Epson Aculaser C900 Printer Review
Epson's Aculaser C900 colour laser printer is a solid average performing printer. It produces print quality that's true to the Epson heritage, offers reasonable printing speeds in both colour and monochrome, and does it all without being too ugly.
Speed
The Aculaser C900 is a fine printer, and one of it most redeeming qualities is its speed. Though outclassed by newer models today, the C900 holds its own with colour printing speeds at a respectable 4 PPM and monochrome at 16 PPM. For many smaller business environments these speeds are just fine, especially in places where there's an emphasis on black and white text printing.
Quality
This is another area in which the C900 maintains its respectability. Black text appears crisp and clean and weighted correctly, and colour, while not good enough to produce family portraits, comes out clear as well. Two-tone graphics prints produce some amount of dithering which can be aggravating, but nothing that most office can't live with.
Capacity
Here is where the C900 is somewhat disappointing especially for an office that keep their printer hopping. The C900 comes standard with a mere 200 sheet capacity, and is only upgradeable to 400 sheets. Again, energetic printing will cause that stash to need to be replaced quite often. The printer is rated for a duty cycle of 35,000 pages per month, which is usually enough to handle the majority of small offices.
Memory
Epson didn't think of large workgroups when they created the Aculaser C900 with a maximum capacity of 144 MB of RAM. The printer comes standard with 16 MB, barely enough to get started with, but only has one expansion slot, so the maximum that can be added down the road is a 128 MB chip. The feature is undoubtedly disappointing to some, but again, it may not cause waves in a primarily text-based printing environment.
Operating Cost
The cost to operate the C900 is quite significant. A full set of toner (each full set includes black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges) costs £383.73, certainly very steep considering most offices will need to replace toner every two or three months. One positive to the cost of consumables is that compatible toners are available and will reduce the cost of printing significantly without a reduction of quality.
