The HP Color LaserJet 2550 printer is a small printer designed to work for small businesses who predominantly print monochromatic work. The printer can undertake colour work but it is incredibly slow. The monthly duty cycle is 30,000 pages and is capable of undertaking more complex tasks such as N-Up printing. The printer also has a number of tasty software options for users to get their teeth into.
HP toner for this machine has been designed to give maximum clarity and vividness. The Laserjet 2550 toner is available in 5,000 page yields for the black and then 4,000 page yields for the cyan, magenta and yellow. HP has designed this printer with users in mind and has made the HP 2550 toner very accessible with an opening front panel. The paper capacity on this model is 125 sheets as standard but if you need more paper, there is an additional 500 sheet paper tray. For those people who have multiple machines in the office, HP 2840 toner also fits this model.
The good news with this printer is its ability to be able to work on both a PC and Mac environment. It uses a parallel, USB connection and a built-in HP Jetdirect print server (10/100Base-TX, RJ45). Getting the printer set-up is very easy and the printer has very simplistic Go, Cancel Job, Rotate Carousel buttons, followed by LEDs for supplies and printer status.
The one area this printer lets it down is the rate it is able to push work out. This is a miserly 4 pages per minute and it is also very slow when it comes to warming up too. Black and white printing is much better with speeds of 16 pages per minute. The 600 x 600 dpi, 2400 IQ resolution is part of what is excellent with this machine, as the print production is very effective and better than one would expect.
The printer can handle cardstock, as it offers a straight-line pathway, along with the ability to print on transparencies, labels, envelopes and glossy papers. The memory on this machine is 64 MB with an option to expand it to 192 MB.
